Butter cream frosting

185g butter, softened
2.5 cups icing sugar
2 teaspoons water or milk

This can be flavoured with melted chocolate, cocoa, flavoured essences like mint or vanilla or simply coloured with food colouring. Be sure to add these additions at the end, not the start.
